Author Kurt Vonnegut said that semicolons are useful only as a way of telling people you've been to college; he had a point.

Apart from the fact that almost nobody is confident about using them, semicolons are not a good choice for marketing copy because they mess with your beautifully crafted flow. The exception is in lists. Here is an example:

You can use semicolons in brochures and letters; and in web sites; and in promotional emails.

To avoid semicolons elsewhere, write shorter sentences. The semicolon in red at the very top of this page can be replaced with a full stop or a colon, but never with a comma (which is called a comma splice).
